He confronted Ahab at the very beginning of the account, and God used him to bring a drought onto the land. Soon after that he pleaded with God to raise up the dead boy and God listened to him. The New Testament says that if we have faith we can move mountains and Elijah is an example of someone who demonstrated this kind of faith. Another example is his challenge to the prophets of Baal. He put his life on the line, having faith that God would answer his prayer and show Himself to His people.
Describe a situation where you can make a stand for God in the world today. Obedience 1 Kings ,5; , - On several occasions God gave Elijah very difficult commands.
He told him to go to a river and wait there and the ravens would provide for him. Elijah did it. God told him to go and let a poor widow provide for him. God told him to go confront Ahab, the king who hated him and wanted to kill him. Courage- On numerous occasions Elijah showed great courage by risking his life in order to make a stand for God in front of the people or in front of Ahab, hoping to encourage them to choose to serve God rather than Baal.
Important acts and events: Bringing the draught to Israel 1 Kings 17 , the challenge to the prophets of Baal 1 Kings 18 , confronting Ahab about the vineyard 1 Kings 2 , translation of Elijah 2 Kings 2. How he died: Elijah is one of only two humans Enoch was the other that never died 2 Kings 2.
God had a special plan for him and took him directly up to heaven in a whirlwind. Because of other Scriptures and the fact that all humans die most believe Elijah either did or will come to earth again, serving a special capacity, and then face death Heb Pleading with God in prayer can accomplish much.
See James What are some other examples where Elijah prayed for miracles and God listened? People worship many idols in this world even though these idols cannot answer prayer or provide protection. Many possible reasons. They are deceived. Their hearts are hard. How should we seek to minister to this type of people? Though the world may grow very evil and corrupt God preserves a remnant of true believers, who serve Him faithfully 1 Kings , What does He desire?
Jezebel, however, thought that she had exterminated all the true prophets, and that only Elijah was left. Officers were then sent throughout the land to find Elijah, but they could not find him. However, when the time came for him to make his appearance, he did so quite fearlessly. It was in the third year of the famine that G-d told Elijah to appear before king Ahab.
Elijah first appeared before Obadiah and told him to bring the news of his coming to king Ahab, for Elijah was not afraid that Ahab might make plans to apprehend him. Ahab met Elijah with ill grace. This must stop now, if Israel is to be saved. Now, therefore, gather all the people on Mount Carmel and all your false prophets and priests of the Baal, and we shall settle the matter once and for all. At Mount Carmel. These were now gathered by Mount Carmel, together with the great masses of the Jewish people.
King Ahab was there, too, to witness the proceedings. You worship the idols, but when you are in trouble you turn to G-d. There can be no two truths. But if you believe in the Baal, let the Baal help you now! Not a voice rose to dispute with Elijah. G-d himself will prove it to you! And here is the test. Let two bullocks be brought.
Let one be offered by the priests of the Baal to their god, and I shall offer the other to the G-d of Israel, the creator of the world. We shall set no fire to the wood. They shall pray to the Baal to send a fire and accept the sacrifice, and I will pray to G-d to send a fire. The one who answers will be recognized as the true G-d.
All the assembled people voiced their agreement, and two bullocks were brought at once. They were twins and absolutely identical in size and appearance. Lots were cast, and Elijah led away his bullock.
The false prophets tried to pull the bullock but could not move him. They prayed for fire from morning to noon; but, of course, nothing happened. Perhaps he is asleep? Cry hard, wake him up! But still nothing happened, and they gave it up, thoroughly exhausted. The Lord He is G-d. Then Elijah called to the people to come closer and watch him. He gathered twelve stones, one for each of the twelve tribes, and erected an altar to G-d.
He ordered that a trench be dug around the altar and filled with water. He poured water upon the sacrifice and upon the wood, until it was drenched. Then he uttered a short prayer:. Answer me, O Lord, answer me!
No sooner did Elijah conclude his prayer than G-d sent down a fire from heaven that consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the earth around and the water of the trench! The Lord, He is G-d! The people then seized the false prophets and executed them. It grew very fast and a few minutes later the sky was black with clouds. The long-awaited rain came down in torrents. Throughout the ages we have proclaimed this truth, that there is only One G-d, the All-mighty and All-powerful Creator and Ruler of the world.
And now, more than ever, we should realize this truth and put our trust in our G-d. He who answered Elijah on mount Carmel will surely answer us. Before Messiah, our righteous redeemer, will make his appearance, Elijah will appear on the mountains of our Holy Land and will herald the good tidings of the coming of Messiah. In the third year of famine G-d ordered Elijah to appear before Ahab and to inform him that G-d would send rain upon the earth. How easy it is to view life through the lens of human vision.
We often see situations as they appear, not how they can be, or we simply make assumptions based on circumstances. Elijah proved no different. A small vision, focus of the human kind, assured he was the only follower of God left, that everyone else had fallen into worship of the false god, Baal. That proved far from the truth. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. One moment Elijah walked this earth, the next he was taken up into heaven.
Elisha, his successor, watched it unfold. I often wonder what emotions Elisha encountered at that moment. As they continued on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
When Elijah departed earth, a legacy remained. Elisha, the prophet mentioned earlier, clung to Elijah. He received a double portion as a result of being present when Elijah departed. Elisha went on to champion the message of following God Almighty and no other. Imagine the view: Elijah standing alongside Moses, the two conversing with Jesus. A hushed holiness washes straight over me whenever I consider it. Peter, John, and James witnessed this spiritual wonder.
Jesus was about to experience the jeers of many, the pain of crucifixion. The three together, Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, represented fulfillment of the promise of salvation. Moses symbolized the law. Elijah represented the prophets, the restoration of all things. And we know that Jesus fulfilled the promise of salvation beautifully. Behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them talking with him. These are a few attributes of the man we know as Elijah. For a more thorough view of the prophet, we can read through 1 Kings , 2 Kings , Malachi , Matthew , John , and James Shoebox Collection Week is Here!
