I have friends that disagree, and we have civil discussions about it. That's what you do. You have civil discussions with the understanding that the idea is that we want the best for everybody. So if we disagree, let's have a conversation about it.

If we have the same goal, we should figure out if we're just looking at it from different perspectives. Q: You mentioned the anonymity of online culture. Do you think the fact that most of our arguments have gone from face to face to happening online is part of what's led us to this moment of being as divided as we are now?

A: Oh yeah. Of course, there's a lot of politically correct things that have kind of happened over the years, but I remember growing up as a kid, half the stuff that people get away with saying to strangers online nowadays, you'd get smacked in the expletive mouth.

It's not even a question. And everyone would stand there and go, "Yep, you deserved that one. Q: Yeah, that's true. I often think about how people learned in bar arguments where you got smacked not to be such an ass sometimes. It was a teachable moment.

A: Well, yeah, if you talked that way in front of my grandma, you got a shoe in the back of the head. My grandma didn't play. If you were disrespectful to anybody in that manner, even if she agreed with you, it didn't matter. Q: Do you find that with the world being in the state it is that your art helps you cope or helps you through the mess? A: I think that's part of it. The art has always been that therapist. And it's expressing in a way hopefully that's positive. I'm sure I'm extremely guilty of expressing it in negative ways too, but I feel like that's kind of that primal scream to let it out, get it done, move on.

You hope that in some way that primal scream helps you build on a more positive approach forward. But yeah, I think this is when the punk rock element in you should shine. This is your time. You should be able to step back from it all and observe, interpret and report, and share that insight. And be ready for the criticisms, I guess. Intention, I think, is pretty much the core of anything.

If your intention is to make things better and you're trying to express it, you let the ugly part out and put in the sunlight so it withers. If you have some kind of thing you where you just wish other people ill will, I don't know, in my opinion, that's not great. That's the opposite of great.

A: Well, it's hopefully making things better for me, as the writer. I have to start at home first and build out and try to correct trajectories that I can and then we can enhance more light, as it were. For me, the noise of the big city, you can kind of get buried in it. That's why I love being able to shed that light on things and have those 40 days in the wilderness here in Arizona. Arizona just gives you that.

It's such a beautiful and dangerous, formidable place. You can't just walk out into the desert here without any kind of preparation. It will school you. So this is a great place for introspection, a great place to feel that danger and understand how small we are and kind of get your head right.

For architects, for artists, for poets, for chefs even, just people that have an artist or a wanderlust at their core, Arizona just flicks a switch in people, I think, when they come here. It really gets their their juices flowing in terms of that elusive idea of a better world and how they can create something to be a metaphor for that feeling. A: It's all year long. There's pieces that are always being kind of whittled on as time goes on. Keenan joined several bands including Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty during the '80s and was even considered as a potential vocalist for Rage Against The Machine he later sang on their single 'Know Your Enemy'.

Maynard James Keenan is the writing force behind the majority of Tool's songs but the band maintain that the writing process is initially a collaborative one.

The band will discuss the topics they would like to discuss, which have previously included death, spirituality and self-identity, and then Keenan sets about writing the lyrics.

Keenan's writing style has often been described as highly personal, deep and intelligent. The song 'Lateralus' is particularly clever because the number of syllables per line corresponds to an arrangement of the Fibonacci numbers.

They share a daughter, Lei Li Agostina Maria who was born on 25th July and her name, which is the same as her Mother and Grandmother, means 'night nocturnal'. Devo was born on 5th August and is now a musician like his father. The pair have performed on stage together on multiple occasions, usually with Keenan's band Puscifer. He was awarded his purple belt when he was 51 years old after recovering from a series of injuries. Maynard also featured in the winery documentary 'Blood Into Wine' in , which talked about the Northern Arizona wine industry and focused on the Caduceus wine brand. While many winemakers use egg whites and a fish bladder derivative called Isinglass to filter their wines, Keenan's wines contain no animal products and go through an all-natural filtration process.

However, this was apparently unintentional. In , Keenan famously posted a selfie on Instagram showing a middle finger to vegans and holding a piece of bacon. The caption read, 'To my horror I realized the wines were in fact vegan.
