A: Well, yeah, if you talked that way in front of my grandma, you got a shoe in the back of the head. My grandma didn't play. If you were disrespectful to anybody in that manner, even if she agreed with you, it didn't matter. Q: Do you find that with the world being in the state it is that your art helps you cope or helps you through the mess? A: I think that's part of it. The art has always been that therapist. And it's expressing in a way hopefully that's positive. I'm sure I'm extremely guilty of expressing it in negative ways too, but I feel like that's kind of that primal scream to let it out, get it done, move on.
You hope that in some way that primal scream helps you build on a more positive approach forward. But yeah, I think this is when the punk rock element in you should shine. This is your time. You should be able to step back from it all and observe, interpret and report, and share that insight. And be ready for the criticisms, I guess. Intention, I think, is pretty much the core of anything.
If your intention is to make things better and you're trying to express it, you let the ugly part out and put in the sunlight so it withers. If you have some kind of thing you where you just wish other people ill will, I don't know, in my opinion, that's not great. That's the opposite of great.
A: Well, it's hopefully making things better for me, as the writer. I have to start at home first and build out and try to correct trajectories that I can and then we can enhance more light, as it were. For me, the noise of the big city, you can kind of get buried in it. That's why I love being able to shed that light on things and have those 40 days in the wilderness here in Arizona.
